Erik Lin-Greenberg

Erik Lin-Greenberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is a member of the MIT Security Studies Program (SSP) and co-directs the SSP Wargaming Lab.

Lin-Greenberg's research examines how emerging military technology affect conflict dynamics and the use of force. His book, The Remote Revolution: Drones and Modern Statecraft (Cornell University Press), studies how remote warfighting technologies are reshaping international politics. The book draws from his dissertation, which received the 2020 Merze Tate Award from the American Political Science Association for the best dissertation in international relations, law, and politics.

In other ongoing projects, Lin-Greenberg explores how technology and public opinion influence decisions on the use of force and alliance politics. He is also interested in the role of food in international politics.

Lin-Greenberg's work has appeared in academic and policy outlets including Journal of Politics, International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of International RelationsJournal of Conflict ResolutionSecurity Studies, Journal of Experimental Political Science, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and The Washington Post. His research has been supported by the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation, the Eisenhower Institute, the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy, and the Smith Richardson Foundation. Lin-Greenberg has held fellowships at Dartmouth’s Dickey Center for International Understanding, the University of Pennsylvania’s Perry World House, and at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation. He is an adjunct fellow with the Center for a New American Security Defense Program.

Lin-Greenberg received his PhD in Political Science at Columbia University and an MS and BS in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before entering academia, he was an active duty officer in the United States Air Force. He has completed assignments in operational units, Headquarters Air Force, the Joint Staff, and currently command a squadron in the Air Force Reserve.
