Matthew Sharp

Senior Nuclear Fellow, Center for Nuclear Security Policy

Matthew Sharp is a Senior Nuclear Fellow at the Center for Nuclear Security Policy (CNSP) within MIT’s Security Studies Program. He served from 2009 to 2025 at the US Department of State, most recently as acting deputy assistant decretary (A/DAS) for nuclear affairs in the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability. A career member of the US Senior Executive Service, Matthew served in a number of positions in the State Department’s Bureaus of Arms Control, Nonproliferation, and European Affairs, including as the deputy counselor for IAEA affairs at the US Mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna from 2016-20. Matthew served as the director for Iran Nuclear Issues at President Biden’s National Security Council staff from 2021-22. Matthew was a 2008-09 postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Managing the Atom Program and holds a PhD in physics from the University of Chicago.
