Renanah Miles Joyce

Renanah Joyce is an assistant professor of security studies at the Walsh School of Foreign Service and Center for Security Studies at Georgetown University. She specializes in international security and U.S. foreign policy, with an emphasis on the ways that powerful states try to shape their security environments.

Joyce's book project, Exporting Might and Right: Security Assistance and Liberal International Order, examines how great powers use security assistance to shape military behavior and compete for influence. Joyce's articles have been published in International Security, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of the Middle East and Africa, Political Science Quarterly, The Washington Quarterly, The National Interest, Lawfare, and elsewhere. Joyce was previously a Grand Strategy, Security, and Statecraft postdoctoral fellow at MIT's Security Studies Program and the Harvard Kennedy School's International Security Program. She has also held fellowships with the Institute for Security and Conflict Studies at George Washington University, the Irregular Warfare Initiative, and the RAND Corporation. 

Joyce received her PhD in political science from Columbia University.

She is an adjunct political scientist at the RAND Corporation, and an external advisor for the U.S. Institute of Peace’s Security Sector Governance and Reform Program. Previously, Joyce was an assistant professor of politics at Brandeis University. She also previously held fellowships with the Irregular Warfare Initiative, a jointly sponsored program between the Modern War Institute at West Point and the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project, Harvard Kennedy School’s International Security Program, and George Washington University’s Institute for Security and Conflict Studies. She has previously worked as an analyst in the US Department of Defense.
