Ian Fleischmann

Lieutenant Colonel Ian Fleischmann, is the 2025-2026 U.S. Army Fellow at MIT's Security Studies Program. He is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Military Intelligence Corps where he has continued to serve as an Intelligence Profession since.
Following completion of the Military Intelligence Basic Officer Leader Course, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division where he served as a Battalion S2 for 7-101 Aviation (GSAB), 1-75 Cavalry Squadron, and 1-502 Infantry Battalion. He deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 with 7-101 AVN out of Balad, IZ and OIF 07-09 with 1-502 IN out of Baghdad, IZ. Following the MI Captain’s Career Course he was assigned to 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks Hawaii where he again served as a Battalion S2 for 2-11 Field Artillery BN and deployed to Balad, IZ for Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. Upon return from Iraq, he was assigned to 500th Military Intelligence Brigade – Theater (MIB(T)) where he served as an Assistant BN S3 and Company Commander before attending the Command and General Staff Officer Course and School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
LTC Fleischmann was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division where he served as the G5 Intelligence Planner, deploying to Bagram, Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom, before being assigned as the BCT S2 for 2/10 Infantry Brigade Combat Team. LTC Fleischmann was then selected to serve as the BCT S2 Observer Coach Trainer at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Johnson, Louisiana; a military fellow at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California; and the operations officer for HQDA G8 Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Systems Division at the Pentagon.
LTC Fleischmann moved to Germany in 2021 where he served as the Battalion Commander for 2d Military Intelligence BN (HUMINT/CI) at Wiesbaden, Germany, supporting Operations Allies Refuge and the military response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He currently serves as the Senior Intelligence Officer at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) at Hohenfels, Germany. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal (3OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), the Army Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal. He has been happily married to his wife Casey since 2005. Together they have four children: Joseph, Henry, William, and Daisy.
