Science in Wartime Ukraine: Campus Engagement

Thousands of educational and research facilities have been destroyed by Russian attacks across Ukraine since 2014. Hundreds of educators have been killed and thousands displaced. Scientific research and education have been threatened across the globe amid military conflict and sociopolitical crises.  How can US universities support colleagues in Ukraine in such times of turmoil?

Please join us for a conversation on how US campuses engage in supporting science and scholars at risk – in Ukraine and beyond – and what we can learn from each other’s successes and failures going forward. Our panelists will share their experiences in supporting science and research infrastructure in Ukraine. We hope the audience will also join in for a conversation and collaboration on this topic across geographic contexts.

Speakers:

Yevheniia Polishchuk, Chair of the Ukrainian Science Diaspora, Professor at Kyiv National Economic University and Visiting Fellow at Krakow University of Economics. She will share her experiences and recommendations as both a displaced scientist and supporter of Ukrainian scientists abroad.

Michael Short, Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT.  Prof. Short will share his and his colleagues’ experiences collaborating with a Kharkiv university, which ended when its lab’s accelerator suffered a direct hit by a Russian missile. He will also propose some low-cost ideas for US universities and the federal government to help preserve Ukrainian scientific minds and restore equipment.

Moderator:

Svitlana Krasynska, MIT-Ukraine Program Manager and Associate at Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. Dr. Krasynska will moderate the discussion and will share her experiences managing the GMAF-Ukraine Program and organizing other kinds of support for Ukrainian scholars and institutions at risk.
