Best Practices to Save Multilateralism

Multilateralism is under unprecedented strain. From great-power rivalry and the fragmentation of the global order to the growing contestation of norms and institutions, the international system faces profound challenges to its legitimacy and effectiveness. This panel explores the latest research on the vulnerabilities of the current multilateral order and the innovative practices that could restore trust and strengthen global cooperation. It draws on the findings of a three-year project conducted by the ENSURED consortium, which brings together universities, think tanks and civil society organizations from across Europe, Brazil, India, South Africa, China, and the United States. Join us for a dynamic panel on the best practices to save multilateralism, where our panelists will address the following themes:

  • How can current multilateral practices bolster more effective, robust and democratic global governance?
  • What lessons can be drawn from ongoing multilateral debates, particularly the contestation surrounding global digital governance?
  • Which traditional practices remain well suited to a multipolar world, and which BRICS practices could strengthen multilateralism at the global level?
