This hands-on class uses percussion and movement to explore some of Brazil’s influential Native Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian cultural traditions. Participants will learn the rhythms and stories behind Maculelê, Axé Music, Samba, and the Amazonian spectacle of Boi Bumbá, discovering how communities use drumming and the arts to express identity, resistance, and joy. Participants will practice call and responses, ensemble playing, and embody rhythms that have shaped Brazil’s history and social dynamics. Designed for curious learners with or without musical experience, as well as musicians and future travelers, this course combines cultural insight with high-energy, community-centered music making.
