In 2026, informal groupings play an increasingly visible role in debates over global leadership. The United States chairs the G20 amid intensifying geopolitical rivalry that strains coordination on finance, climate, and technology, while India leads an expanded BRICS that seeks to amplify the influence of new powers and deepen South–South cooperation. Do these parallel presidencies open space for shared leadership—or do they instead reflect the consolidation of competing spheres of influence in global governance?
