The Center serves as the Institute’s administrator for the following fellowships and grants. Eligibility, application process, and deadlines are unique to each opportunity. The broad opportunity of fellowships gives endless possibilities to gain experiences in independent research in a foreign country, learning another language, and exploring a world that as a student at MIT you might be passionate about it, nonetheless building durable networks nationally and internationally with alike minds.
Luce Scholars Program
Applications for the 2023–2024 Luce Scholars competition will open on April 25th, 2023, through the online portal. The application deadline is October 16th at 5:00 pm ET.
The Luce Scholars Program is a nationally competitive fellowship program. It places young scholars from a wide variety of intellectual fields in 10-month internships in 15 different countries in East, Southeast and South Asia. The program, open to both US citizens and permanent residents, is unique among American-Asian exchanges in that it is intended for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia. Luce Scholars have backgrounds in virtually every field other than Asian studies, including but not limited to the arts, journalism, law, medicine, science, public health, environmental studies, and international relations. Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Carnegie runs an annual national competition to select from 12-14 graduating seniors to be research fellows in its DC offices. Successful applicants are matched with a senior associate—academics, former government officials, lawyers and journalists from around the world—to work on a variety of international affairs issues. NSEP Boren Fellowships
Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to US interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Fellows represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. Comparative Media Studies
CMS/W an MIT program, has established a Visiting Scholars program which facilitates the residency of a limited number of distinguished scholars from other academic institutions or accomplished professionals whose expertise coincides with current research projects. Visiting Scholar positions are non-compensated appointments established to accommodate the scholars’ research and enrich the CMS research community. For more information, please click here.
Consortium on Qualitative Research Methods (CQRM)
The Consortium on Qualitative Research Methods (CQRM) holds an annual training institute on qualitative research methods. Information is provided at http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/moynihan/programs/cqrm/.
MIT, as a member institution, can select one student or junior faculty member to attend the institute. Students who wish to apply for MIT selection must contact Susan Twarog, by September 15, 2023. Department of Political Science (office: E53-467, phone: 617-253-8336). Students, fellows and junior faculty members not so selected, or who attend non-member organizations, may apply directly to CQRM. CQRM will cover the costs of tuition, lodging, and meals for successful applicants. Student attendees will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from the meeting.
MIT graduate students accepted either through MIT or directly through CQRM may request reimbursement from CIS for up to $250 in travel costs. Expenses will be reimbursed after the training institute on presentation of receipts for airfare and any other travel expenses. Please submit the request for reimbursement to the CIS Executive Director.
Fulbright
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research, and/or teach English abroad. In addition, Critical Language Enhancement Awards are available to grantees for study of critical need foreign languages before or during their grant period. Fulbright is a program of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).
